Bruxism-grinding of the teeth either at night or during the day- can be a contributing factor to many of these issues. Many people are unaware that they are grinding their teeth or clenching their jaw, but are experiencing pain in the TMJ area, neck or face. Malalignment of the teeth and/or jaw can also cause similar discomforts. If left untreated, the pain will continue to worsen, and may lead to teeth being permanently damaged or lost as a result.
First of all, if it is determined that bruxism is the root cause of the pain, we recommend a
nightguard to act as a cushion between your top and bottom teeth to minimize any further damage. We will take an impression of your teeth using a mold, which will be sent to a lab where your own custom nightguard will be created.
Nightguards created for you in a dental are far superior to store bought “boil and bite” ones, which don’t fit as securely. Professionally made nightguards can also be worn during the day to help remind you not to clench your jaw.
Relaxation techniques are also an important part of treating TMJ disorders and associated neck, facial pain and headaches. Increased stress levels can cause tension in many areas of the body and contribute to bruxism. Feel free to speak with
