Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Whether it is a sudden toothache, a broken tooth, or an injury from sports or an accident, it is important to stay calm and know what steps to take. Acting quickly can relieve pain, prevent infection, and help save your tooth. At Boisson Dental Group, we provide prompt, caring treatment for dental emergencies in Grande Prairie and surrounding areas.

Here is what you need to know if you or a family member faces a dental emergency.

1. Severe Toothache or Swelling

Tooth pain is often a sign of infection or inflammation. Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove anything stuck between the teeth. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, as this can cause burns. Call us as soon as possible. If swelling is present, apply a cold compress on the outside of the cheek.

2. Broken or Chipped Tooth

If part of your tooth breaks, try to save the piece if possible. Rinse your mouth with warm water to keep the area clean. Avoid chewing on that side. Even small chips should be evaluated, as cracks can worsen if untreated.

3. Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is urgent. The best chance of saving it is within 30 to 60 minutes.

Steps to follow:

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root
  • Rinse gently if dirty but do not scrub
  • Try to place it back in the socket
  • If that is not possible, place it in milk or saliva and bring it with you

Call our office immediately for emergency care.

4. Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown comes loose, keep the area clean and avoid chewing hard foods on that side. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may help until you see us. We can repair or replace your restoration to protect the tooth.

5. When to Seek Immediate Care

You should contact us right away if you experience:

  • Severe pain
  • Bleeding that does not stop
  • Swelling in the face or jaw
  • A tooth that is loose or knocked out
